Passionate about the environment, technology and saving money.
Cinque Terre National Park is five miles of rocky coast in eastern Liguria, Italy. 2.5 million people visit every year. The park’s tourism board employs over 250 staff.
Cinque Terre National Park employees use Skype to talk to each other – far more than they email. Their day often starts with a virtual meeting on Skype, where people working at home or away from the office all call in, too. Simple. “That you can be at home and have a window open onto the world is of priceless value,” says Park Manager Luca Natale.
Cinque Terre has 30-40 important contacts around the world. Skype makes keeping in contact easy. Australia, New Zealand, China, Easter Island, Uruguay. No problem. Luca says: “Nowadays, geographical isolation is far less important than technological isolation. If we had to choose between building a motorway and getting broadband, we should opt for the latter.”
Park staff use Skype to send files. They find it easier and quicker than email. “It’s definitely better to send files over Skype,” says Luca, “as you are sure to receive the information, and the person sending it can be sure that you’ve got it.”
Clinque Terre has also saved money by using free Skype audio and video calling. And staff are more productive, spending less time sending and reading emails. “Skype has become an essential tool for our work” says Luca. “It’s an immediate way to optimise our costs and time.” Thumbs up then.
