I have been rather quiet lately.

In our January newsletter, I said my main ambition as head of SDP was to make the Skype Developer Program more relevant for the company, and more useful for the community. It still is. And the reason for my public silence is that I've been working a lot in-house. It's actually as simple as 1-2-3:

  • In order to become more useful for the community
  • we need input from our engineering, product, legal, and other teams
  • that we can only get if we can prove the community's relevance for the company.

Skype has grown up with a consumer value proposition at its heart. Skype's primary use is associated with individuals (consumers) using Skype to communicate with their friends and family. Like eBay, Skype started as, and has been branded as, a pure consumer-to-consumer proposition. Yet its customer base has naturally begun to evolve and we are experiencing growth from groups other than individual consumers. Specifically, Skype is seeing an emerging community of Small Businesses (SMB's) getting value from Skype. This emerging segment is a key opportunity for Skype to expand & extend the company beyond its current market perception as consumer only, without ignoring or forgetting our highly valued consumer customers.

Reportedly, spam now constitutes more than 75% of all processed e-mails. For now spam in Skype chat is still relatively rare, at least in comparison with what is happening with e-mails. Seeing as how Skype userbase continues growing, it is only a matter of time when most of us will have to seriously consider turning off accepting chats from previously unknown sources.
