Which is better: calling / phone cards
or Skype?

Skype dial pad

We'd say Skype - but that's obvious... Phone cards are everywhere - but how many calling and phone cards offer voice and video calls and voicemail as well as a host of other useful features? Well, erm... that'll be a big fat zero.

With Skype you get:

  • Free Skype-to-Skype voice and video calls.
  • Great rate calls home or abroad.
  • Same call rate any time of the day, any day of the week.

How do calling and phone cards work?

Those little credit card-sized calling and phone cards that you buy at a store involve revealing a code number and then calling a special (long...) number on the card. The call rates vary and the small print usually states that after your first call you have a limited time - usually just 30 days - to use the credit remaining on the card. Phone cards are usually only usuable within one country, so you can’t travel with them.

Additionally the per minute costs may vary without any way to quickly check the rates that you are paying for your call.

How is Skype different to calling and phone cards?

Skype is free calls, free video calls and free instant messaging. And you can call landlines and mobiles anywhere in the world at great rates. It's free to download and easy to use. Also, your credit remains active for 180 days after every call you make. Also, unlike phone cards, you can use your Skype Credit wherever you are in the world.

Skype uses the internet to let people call their friends and family for free (Skype-to-Skype) or at great low rates (Skype-to-phones). All you need to start making free and great value calls is a broadband internet connection, Skype and a little credit.

Simply download Skype onto your computer or mobile phone and then if your friends are already using Skype you can talk to them at great rates (or even for free).

Skype Credit and monthly subscriptions

To reach people who don't have Skype simply add some Skype Credit (starts from just $10). We have great call rates - for example you can call over 30 countries worldwide for one flat fee of just 2.1¢ per minute. Other destinations are really good value as well - check them out.

For even greater call savings try a monthly subscription with no long term contract - simply pick your preferred subscription - we have several options from calling an individual country, to calling a group of countries to even a worldwide subscription. All plans include unlimited calls1 to landlines (and some even include calls to mobile phones as well).
