How to find the audio settings

Click on the Start button > Settings > Control Panel.

The Control Panel Window will appear.

Find the Sounds and Audio Devices section. Now double click on it.

How to change playback options

Find the Audio section tab on the Sounds and Audio Devices panel. This will open your Audio Settings.

Under Sound playback, choose the device Skype uses from the dropdown list. Then click on the Volume button.

The Volume Control panel will appear. Click Options > Properties.

The Properties panel will appear. Under Show the following volume controls click in all the boxes that don't have a tick. Every item in the list should now have a tick beside it.

Click OK.

In the Volume Control panel, make sure that Microphone volume controllers for playback have a tick beside Mute. If not, click in the box.

All the other volume controllers should NOT be muted.

Now click Options > Exit.

How to change recording options

In the Sounds and Audio Devices panel click Sound Recording. Under Sound Recording choose the device that Skype uses from the dropdown list.

Click on the Volume button.

The Recording Control panel will appear. Now click Properties > Options in the menu.

The Properties panel will appear.

Under Show the following volume controls, click in all the boxes that don't have a tick. Now all the items should have ticks beside them.

Click OK.

Microphone Properties

In the Recording Control panel, under Microphone make sure there is a tick beside Select. If not, click in the box.

Now click Options > Advanced Controls.

Click the Advanced button under the Microphone volume.

The Advanced Controls for Microphone panel will appear.

Under Other Controls, make sure there is no tick beside Microphone Boost. If this is ticked, click in the box to untick it.

Click the Close button.

In the Recording Control panel click Options > Exit.

Now make a test call in Skype to check your microphone.

If you are still having problems with the microphone:

Click on Start > Programs > Accessories > Entertainment > Sound Recorder.

The Sound Recorder panel will appear.

Try to record your speech though your microphone. Now play it back.

If you can't hear what you recorded, go to the Sounds and Audio section of the Control Panel and play with the microphone settings until the recording test works for you.

If you can hear your recording, make sure that Skype uses the Windows default audio device (follow the steps below).

How to check Skype’s configuration to use the Windows Default Device

Start Skype

Click Tools > Options in the main menu.

Find the Audio Settings tab and click on it.

In the Microphone and Speakers dropdown menus, select the devices you chose in the Control Panel.

Click Save.

Test your sound in Skype

If you are still having problems with your audio or microphone, go back to the Sounds and Audio section of the Control Panel.

In Sound Playback click the Volume button and check the following:

Mute all has to be unchecked.

Wave Mute has to be unchecked.

Microphone Mute has to be checked.

Other channels (CD Player, Video, 3D Depth, etc) are not important.

In Sound Recording click the Volume button and check the following:

Microphone has to be checked.

All other options have to be unchecked.

No other channels must be selected.

Now test your sound again.
