The invisible office man
Karl J. in New York City, New York, USA

“I am an actor and producer in New York City. My days mostly consist of running around town from audition to audition, which leaves little time to go home for a breather, check email, chat with friends and return phone calls.
It’s a lifesaver to have a laptop, especially in this city — there is Wi-Fi almost anywhere you go. In addition to the free networks provided by the city in the parks, there are also tons of personal hot spots that people share with the public just because they want to.
It gets costly to go into internet cafés all the time, and making international phone calls on a cell phone is a financial nightmare.
With the help of Skype I can sit down in any park and literally turn it into a mobile communication center.
Suddenly I have my email, IM, and phone right at my fingertips — and after I set up my business partners’ laptops up with Skype too, it’s like we have free mobile phones. Calling Europe became cheaper than calling my friends in this country with my cell phone.
It’s amazing how clear someone sounds even if they are literally on the other side of the world. Skype was first introduced to me about two years ago, when the first beta came out. When I installed it I was a kid in a candy shop!”
