Problem description and brief discussion Description ----------- A security bug in the Skype for Windows user client has been identified and fixed. The flaw exists within the skype4com URI handler component of Skype. An exploitable memory corruption may occur during the parsing of URIs which can result in arbitrary code execution under the user rights of the current Windows account. Discussion ---------- An attacker who constructs a Skype URI that is malformed in a specific way can cause Skype to crash and allow for the execution of arbitrary instructions. For the vulnerability to be triggered, the target must visit a malicious web page. This behavior is due to incorrect handling of arguments passed to a function in the Skype skype4com URI handler. This is tracked by Mitre CVE ID CVE-2007-5989. ________________________________________________________________________ 2. Impact and affected software Impact ------ A user of Skype for Windows who visits specially crafted webpage may experience a crash of the Skype software and possibly may execute arbitrary code without consent.
