Your chats are about to get much better, Skype's new and improved messaging is here!

Last month we revealed our big plans for an improved, faster, reliable, and super modern-looking Skype. Now we’re making good on our promise by rolling out the first of the new upgrades.

Ready to see what Skype’s new and improved messaging has in store for you? Let's take it from the top – or if you’d rather experience it first-hand, go download latest Skype version (8.77) now to see it for yourself. (And if you're not one for commitment, you can get the same experience on the web – simply type web.skype.com in your browser, even on mobile!)

Your chat list got a glow up

Let's play “spot the difference.” Here’s a look at the awesome new changes you can expect from Skype so you can flex your knowledge to your friends.

Your name and status are now cleaner and more clearly defined. Leaving for a lunch break? Set your status to BRB or let people know you're on a vacation with a palm tree 🌴. And nothing sets the mood like good music, so share your taste with a link to your fav music video or playlist.

Now for the nitty-gritty details: You’ll notice new rounded corners! Groundbreaking. The search bar, dial pad and selected chats now feel much more 2021, and it all fits together with seamless design that’s easier on the eyes.

Do you know who you're messaging with?

What’s the most important thing when it comes to messaging on Skype? Knowing who you're messaging with — and what better way to differentiate chats from one another than adding avatars to your message window? With a glance, you can instantly make sure the right person receives your message – and if you still make a mistake, simply delete the message. Easy.

We also made some major changes to your settings. Search, gallery and add contact buttons are now located next to your call button for better access and faster search. We’ve also added a settings icon “cog” next to your name or group name so it’s easier to see exactly where to adjust your chat settings.

On top of all this, we’ve unified group chats and Meet Now chats with one “Start call” button. While you likely won’t notice this change (okay, maybe just the delightful new gradients on buttons and users who don’t have an avatar), it all adds up to a smoother, faster, more fun Skype experience. We're proud of these small changes that make the world (or at least your chat list) a happier place.

You’ll notice new changes on the Skype mobile app, too

Be on the lookout for a new footer and header in your mobile app. The notification tab is now right at your fingertips, so you’ll instantly know who reacted to your message with a :cry laugh emoji: or what the latest Skype updates mean for you.

Do you know where to create a new chat, dial people or invite friends? No need to give it a second thought, our new floating button does the job! Switch between tabs to see just how easy it is to use — you’ll never want to go back.
